Led by mastermind Francis Farewell Starlite, Francis and the Lights have drawn inspiration from the godfathers of funk such as Prince and James Brown, as well as their disciples such as Jamie Lidell and Chromeo, to create something new, vital and undeniable their own.
The current live incarnation of the band includes two drummers playing in conjunction with sequenced percussion. On November 3, 2008, the band was incorporated as Francis and the Lights, LLC., and accepted an investment from The Normative Music Company, who also issued their 2nd record.
Cantora Records released a new EP from the band, LIME/WYN, in 2008. Francis and the Lights has also recorded a cover of Kanye West's 'Can't Tell Me Nothing' for Engine Room Recordings' compilation album Guilt by Association Vol. 2, which was released in November of that same year. The band has performed as the opening act for MGMT, and was signed on as opening support for Drake's college tour in 2010.

Championed by artists like Kanye West, Ryan Leslie, and Drake, Francis and the Lights make a compelling case for the return of Blue Eyed Soul. More accurately though, they are a Rock and Roll band, whose leader, Francis Farewell Starlite, writes Pop songs that make him want to dance. After two widely circulated EPs, a buzzed about music video that leaped to mtv2 without a record label, and a history of legendary New York shows, Francis and Lights now unveil their awaited 8-song debut, "It'll Be Better." The band was hand-picked by hip hop superstar Drake to support his first North American Tour, this spring and summer, and will also headline shows of their own along the way. On stage, Starlite delivers a breathtaking show, somehow straddling the gap between carefully considered choreography and wild abandon. Francis is an eccentric, but it is perfectionism and transparency that make Francis and the Lights `elusive.' There are plans here. It is a train worth getting on.

I stumbled onto this entirely by coincidence because of an article about this album being the first ever to be released as an embeddable HTML5 widget. Sometimes the internet is full of happy coincidences. What I found was an album that's so new and fresh, yet could easily have been recorded in 1985 and no one would have thought it was out of place. I'm not entirely convinced that Francis didn't actually time travel from the 80s to 2006 to capitalize on the cyclical nature of music appreciation.
Frontman Francis Farewell Starlite conjures essences of 80s greats Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Prince in his music and vocal stylings, and in the video for `Darling, It's Alright,' even manages to conjure up some Rick Astley with his random and awesome dance at the end.
I highly recommend this album.

"Going Out" is a stone cold classic song. I love it. The other songs are pretty neat as well. Do yourself a favor and dig heavy on this mess. This is only the seventh Amazon review I've ever posted. The first was for Weird Al's "Even Worse" album, which I love. This Francis and the Lights album is "even better" than "Even Worse." PLEASE make these people famous, people.

Great mix of music, songwriting, and production. Nice surprise from a new (to me) artist. Unique singing voice with different roots, influences, themes and passions: clearly Francis and the band enjoy their art.

This music streams into your brain and and will NOT leave! All of the influences (Prince,etc.) are duly noted but ultimetaly transformed into something new and unique. "Tap The Phone" will not leave your head, I promise. Thank goodness for music this fresh! This is the first music I have bought solely as a download and it is all interesting. Leaving aside anything prior to this CD is OK though because "It'll Be Better" is perfect in and of itself. What at treat!

Francis and the Lights have released some singles and EPs that showed real potential for the band, but this is more of a finished product. It's a fuller, more polished production and has more consistent songwriting. Most of the songs are as good or better than anything else I've heard from them. The band has been on the road away from NY a lot lately, and it seems like they are really maturing into a top class act. This is their best recording so far.
