Album Description "[A] wondrously eclectic tapestry of foreign textures, sounds, and cultures." -- Boston Globe "This is rich, hugely approachable music, utterly cosmopolitan yet utterly unpretentious. And it seems to speak to just about everybody." -- Washington Post "Ms. Forbes is an unpretentious, pitch-perfect chanteuse who can be breathy and girlish or sultry. Album Description Pink Martini--the genre-bending, best-selling, supremely talented, and raucously fun twelve-piece ensemble that the New Yorker calls simply "beautiful," sophisticated," and "breathtaking"--returns with Hey Eugene! a twelve-track sonic journey anchored by deft songwriting and a no-holds-barred dose of cabaret showmanship. "We're kind of like musical archaeologists, bringing melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something that is modern," explains bandleader, artistic director, and founder Thomas Lauderdale. Delivered with sultry grace by lead singer China Forbes, Hey Eugene! shines throughout--from the golden-era Hollywood melody of "Everywhere" to the French cabaret of "Ojala." Other collaborations anchor the set as well: the pan-world "Dosvedanya, Mio Bombino" with its Latin-meets-Russian beat and globetrotting subject matter, plus the Forbes-Lauderdale-penned sexy sway of "City of Night." Peruvian percussionist Martin Zarzar debuts the romantically complex "Mar Desconocido" and bassist Phil Baker adds the quiet beauty of "Cante e Dance." The group also mines the past for hidden gems, including the Japanese-language track "Taya Tan" and their first-ever recording in Arabic, "Bukra wba'do." Meanwhile, clever lyricism leads to an empowering dose of pop perfection on the title track by Forbes (about a boy she met at a party who asked for her number and never called). Finally, jazz legend Jimmy Scott makes a stunning vocal guest appearance in a duet with Forbes on the closing song "Tea for Two." With Hey Eugene! Pink Martini has returned with an exhilarating album full of uncompromising musicianship, hope, beauty, and joy!

Another Amazing Album - 4 for 4! October 27, 2009 James Buss (Los Angeles) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have been anxiously awaiting this new album after I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last month. They performed so many of these new tracks and it brings back that wonderful night.
I highly recommend this to ANY Pink Martini fan - it might be my favorite so far (although Hang On Little Tomato would be a close second). This album has that wonderful feel of the mid to late 60s (a bit of a Herb Albert & the Tijuana Brass touch. Its has several fun songs and many of their usual beautiful arrangements with clever call backs to amazing composers.
Over the Valley stands out (as it did at the Hollywood Bowl - you could hear a pin drop as she and Thomas delicately floated through one of the best original written melodies since Moon River).
Thank you for this fantastic album. This will carry me for a good year!
THOMAS AND CHINA - I am sure you need a break BUT GET BACK TO WORK on the next collection of amazing pieces of work! We love you!
"Splendor in the Grass (2009) ... Pink Martini ... Heinz Records" October 27, 2009 J. Lovins (Missouri-USA) 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
Heinz Records presents "SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS", featuring Thomas Lauderdale (piano), China Forbes (vocals), Timothy Nishimoto: vocals, percussion), Gavin Bondy (trumpet), Robert Taylor (trombone), Nicholas Crosa (violin), Pansy Chang (cello), Dan Faehnle (guitar), Phil Baker (upright bass), Maureen Love (harp), Brian Davis (congas, percussion), Derek Rieth (congas, percussion), Martin Zarzar (drums, percussion) --- and that my friends is Pink Martini!
The fourth album from the celebrated "little orchestra" features an array of fabulous guests including Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas, Emilio Delgado a.k.a. "Luis" from Sesame Street, NPR justice correspondent Ari Shapiro, and Courtney Taylor-Taylor of the Dandy Warhols!
If you enjoyed this album check out "Sympathique" (1997), "Hang on Little Tomato" (2004), "Hey Eugene!" (2007), "Discover the World: Live in Concert" (DVD) (2009), which is one of the best DVD's in my collection, you feel as if you're there in the concert hall --- all titles are available from Amazon and you may sample some of the tracks, try it you may just become a Pink Martini fan like the rest of the world.

Love Pink Martini! October 28, 2009 Tievoli (Los Angeles, CA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love Pink Martini, but I am not sure about the last CD. I expected much more. The first song is great, but the rest are under a ??? Few songs should not even be on this CD. Song "Sing" which is sang much better by Carpenters, "Piensa En Mi" done by a guy, who sounds like he is at the funeral of his beloved wife. I don't understand the lyrics, maybe that's what he is singing about. "New Amsterdam" very week song that puts me to sleep. This CD is the weakest out of 4 CDs.
I am giving 5 stars because I love the band for their talent and new experiments in the music world. They are also very good performers LIVE. I saw them in concert, and would go to see them again.
If you like Pink Martini, you should have this CD in your collection. Very clever CD cover, that was designed with the flavor of LPs in early sixties.
Another Stellar Release November 12, 2009 RP (Seattle) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After three outstanding albums, Pink Martini does it again with a simply stunningly beautiful album. PM fans will not be disappointed.
China Forbes' voice is as exotic, gorgeous and stirring as ever. The songs range from the solemn and moving (Ninna nanna, New Amsterdam) to festive and bouncy (But Now I'm Back, Bitty Boppy Betty). Two songs in the middle are a bit slow, but that's a minor issue, not nearly enough to drop my rating from anything but a solid five stars.
As usual, the CD booklet contains lyrics for all songs (including English translations for foreign language songs) and fun band pictures.
Overall, another stellar release. PM fans, rejoice!
It Just Keeps Getting Better October 29, 2009 L. Ford (Studio City, CA USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I first stumbled upon Pink Martini a couple of years ago at the Hollywood Bowl and have been eagerly anticipating their return to that venue. After this summer's concert, I purchased all three of their existing CDs, and preordered Splendor in the Grass. It arrived this week, and I'm in love. No other musical group today brings back the sounds of big band musicianship in the same way as Pink Martini. As a perfect complement to China's smooth-as-butter vocals, Thomas and the band perform challenging, witty, harmonic refrains that linger with the listener for hours and days after hearing them. This is a true gem to add to any music collection.
