Amazon.com For a man who gets his biggest kicks surfing the waves and strumming his guitar on a lonely beach in native Hawaii, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has carved out quite a remarkable career on the mainland. His 2003 album, On and On, debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and subsequently went platinum on the back of hit single "The Horizon Has Been Defeated." The follow-up, meanwhile, seems destined to shine even brighter. The drifting chords and soft voice are still in place, only now Johnson's instinct for melody has sharpened alongside his ability to self-edit. These small concessions make third album, In Between Dreams, his most conspicuous, particularly on tracks like the three-minute relationship drama, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," and "Breakdown," a song he originally recorded for Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People album remade here to reveal its full stripped-down loveliness. Imagine all the coconuts it will buy. -- Aidin Vaziri

blown away... March 14, 2005 A. Robert (the sunshine state, usa) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
it it was possible, i would have given this cd 6 stars... it's been on constant repeat in the background ever since i got this cd the day it came out (i pre-ordered it as soon as i heard word of a new jack johnson cd...gasp!)
i have liked jack for several years, ever since his debut album "brushfire fairytales." since then, he's also come out with "on and on," (making this his 3rd) and i honestly would never be able to choose my favorite. he's got a soothing, raspy voice and perfectly harmonizing guitar, and he has such a way with words: he doesn't just write about love (although his love songs will make your heart flutter!) but he also writes about worldly issues that get you thinking.
back to this new cd... wow. if you can't tell by now... i HIGHLY recommend it; it's one of those cds that's good the very first time you listen to it. highlights are "better together," (the tune is infectious and his voice is dreamy) "banana pancakes" (because it's such a cute concept and such a rainy summer day anthem) and "sitting waiting wishing" (which i got addicted to before the release of the cd; the video can be seen on his website, www.jackjohnsonmusic.com)
DEFINITELY buy it... you won't regret it
We Could All Use More Jack April 1, 2006 Rubina Hyder (Los Angeles, CA) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I introduced Jack to a friend of mine and he fell in love with this album. He listened to it so often that he started to refer to Jack's lyrics in 'Better Together' and kept it with him wherever he went. Not long after he discovered Jack's music, he got into a terrible car accident and passed away.
Every time I hear Jack's 'Better Together,' I think about all of the times when my friend would either text or sing or email me the lyrics to this song. It's a bittersweet memory to such a lovely song.
Jack's music is reflective and there is always something special about his way with words. Maybe it's the melodious guitars or my personal memories that are attached to each song. Or maybe it's because if you were to take Jack with you to the beach and watch the sun set, you would realize how special this album is. It leaves you thinking about life's random moments, the good and the bad.
It's not always easy,
and sometimes life can be deceiving.
I'll tell you one thing:
it's always better when we're together.
Yeah, it's always better when we're together.
Three for Three March 8, 2005 Stephen E. Malo (Litchfield, CT USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Another unbelievable treasure from Jack. I've been a fan only since the debut of his first album, Brushfire Fairytales. I'm sure there are fans who followed him for years before the debut, but being from Connecticut I guess I was out of the loop.
A friend of mine complained that this album sounded too much like his first two efforts. I say why change? I'm the biggest AC/DC fan on the planet (and I like Jack?) and they haven't changed their style or sound in thirty years. What has it gotten them? A trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the utmost respect from rock legends around the world. Jack will be there, someday, too. I knew from the cathcy first song that this would be a winner, and I was right. Sticking to your guns and playing what you feel is the key to success. The only sad thing for me is the entire 11 song album is only 41 minutes. I need more and hope it doesn't take a couple of more years for his fourth effort.
Basically, if you liked JJ before, you'll love him still. Only if you're hoping for something "different" will you be disappointed. I say buy!
I am back to buying albums because of Jack Johnson October 6, 2005 A. Woods (California) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Being a devoted iPod user, I had gotten away from buying entire albums. I would download a single song here and there but feel no real need to buy the entire album. This CD has changed that for me. I started with his first single Sitting, Waiting, Wishing and then slowly added more and more song from the album. It is a wonderful CD with music that is mellow, fun, romantic and in general, just enjoyable. What I like best about his music is that it can be all of those things without being sappy, boring or repetitive. He has a wonderful style to him and his voice is a pleasure to listen to. I look forward to his next CD!
It's art to me October 12, 2005 Green Leaf (California) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I like this album more the more I listen. The lyrics and the music work together in the way that tells me they came from straight from the writer's right brain. I guess this is so, because I feel transported when I listen. You need both the lyrics and the music to be inspired to have a powerful work that can really move, and this album does that for me.
All the tracks are good. There is not a bad track on this album. I am happy to whole-heartedly support this artist.
