Eminem's fourth album offers few surprises, but still enough pleasures to carry the day. As evinced by Em's pre-election, pro-voting "Mosh," this is not exactly the same Eminem who seemingly crapped on anything and everything. Encore finds a surprisingly mature Eminem waxing reflective about his battle with Benzino ("Like Toy Soldiers") rather than unloading both barrels. However, it's not all elder statesmanship: "Puke" goes after his ex-wife Kim with incredible scorn, and "Big Weenie" showcases the familiar juvenile humor that made him famous. If Encore has a clear weakness, it's the bland production--the same plodding sound that he and Dr. Dre cooked up on the previous three albums. The exotic flavor of "Ass Like That" catches the ear, but many others run off the same monotonous minor-key melodies and tempos. Of course, people buy Eminem albums to hear him spit first and foremost, and in that regard few fans will be disappointed by Encore; it'd just be nice to see him switch up his sound at some point. --Oliver Wang

He followed up in November 2002 with Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture `8 Mile', which featured the Academy Award winning song "Lose Yourself" and sold almost 9 million copies worldwide. Earlier this year, Eminem's group D-12 released D-12 World (global sales over 3 million) and scored hits with "My Band" and "How Come".

ENCORE, Executive Produced by DR. DRE, features guest performances by 50 CENT, D-12, NATE DOGG, OBIE TRICE, and STAT QUO.

5 out of 5 stars Don't expect an encore of The Eminem Show   November 13, 2004

I can see how some Eminem fans might be disappointed with this album. Too many people were expecting another `The Eminem Show' or `Marshall Mathers LP'. But to their surprise, they got *gasp* a different album.

The same thing happens with almost every artist out there. Around the fourth album or so the artist changes their style, wanting to do something different, but they end up being called sell-outs, or people are disappointed in the new sound.

In my opinion, this could be Eminem's best album so far, or at least it matches up to the rest of his work. Except `Encore' works on a different level than his previous albums. Until now his albums have had a consistency through most of the disc, where if you like one track, you'll probably like the next. But this is not the case for `Encore'. Yes, there are tracks that fit in with the sound of `The Eminem Show', but there are some that people may find annoying, or disgusting.

Marshall shows his sense of humor much more on this album than he has done in the past. To the dismay of some, his sense of humor includes potty-humor. On more than a couple tracks you'll hear burping or farting noises, but if you can get past that you'll probably enjoy those songs.

I've decided to give this album five stars for a few reasons.
Reason #1: I can't give it 4 ½ stars.
Reason #2: I think a lot of the reviews on this site gave it an unjustified low rating, so I'll do what I can to balance it out.
Reason #3: Unlike most rap albums, this one has variety, and it shows Marshall's talent and personality.

If you're expecting a rerun of Eminem's past albums you might want to listen to `Encore' before you buy it, but otherwise I would say this is a great CD to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Encore   November 12, 2004

i have listened to this album for two weeks now. The first time i listened to it, i thought that it was absolutely rubbish. But, after listening to the album it does grow on you a lot and begin to enjoy it. Encore is a new style for eminem changing from the eminem show. The best songs for me are
Like toy soldiers
Rain Man
Spend some time
Mockingbird
Crazy in love

However, unlike the eminem show which every song was likeable, Encore does throw up a few songs that just dont cut it. In my opinion they are
My first single - annoying beat
Ass like that

A new direction for eminem in which he includes more politcal messages and differing styles.

This is a great album, but I wasn't feeling that after the first listen. That is because em creates music that grows on you because there is nothing else out there like it. The people who rated this low will ultimately change their minds once they listen to the album enough. A classic eminem at his best, who proves this time around he can rap about nothing and make completely no sense and still be genious.

If you havent listened to em's albums before this I suggest you study those first otherwise you won't understand what he is spitting.
. (Curtains Up - Encore Version)
2. Evil Deeds 4/5
3. Never Enough 4.5/5
4. Yellow Brick Road 5.5/5 best storyteller
5. Like Toy Soldiers 6.5/5 good boy eminem
6. Mosh 6/5
7. Puke 4/5
8. My 1st Single 4/5
9. Paul [Skit]
10. Rain Man 5/5 grows on you, fat beat (original)
11. Big Weenie 4.5/5
12. Em Calls Paul [Skit]
13. Just Lose It 5/5
14. Ass Like That 5/5
15. Spend More Time 5.5/5 great song
16. Mockingbird 7/5 the best
17. Crazy In Love 6/5 how did he do that?
18. One Shot 2 Shot 4/5
19. Final Thought [Skit]
20. Encore/Curtains Down 5/5 classic west coast beats

In other words listen to the album, it will grow on you and you'll love it. Like he says in the album let him take you on a journey and hypnotize you, if you are resistant than you must be a republican bush fan. Because em lets everyone know on "Mosh" if he had to snipe you know who it would be tonight. Lyrically untouchable, this album will be in your cd player until everyone else hates you. He even talks about getting dre to do another album in the last track, look for "detox" by dre coming out in the next couple of years. Em poses as triumph the insult dogg, talks about jojo, jessica simpson, hilary duff, and heck even arnold makes a guest appearance screaming "get down!!!" Which is what everyone should be doing, getting on their knees and worshipping this album for what it is. GREAT!!!

5 out of 5 stars On a different level.   November 15, 2004

An entertaining rhymester

I think people need to realize that this man is a poet. I've been listening to hip hop my whole life and never heard anybody rhyme like him. People listen for a beat and think it's great but don't hear the words. Eminem doesn't need music and could still be Platinum but people just don't see it. Instead they judge him for things he does yet 80% of hip hop artists do the same thing? Give respect where it's due. This man can entertain, give you chills and puts you there when he speaks.

The first couple of reviews are weak, and so are the people that wrote them. They have nothing better to do than to degrade an artist that they truly do not like and try to make it not so obvious. Well this is an ode to Eminem. This cd kicks major ass and is going to be a top seller again regardless of how bad people review it. Be smart and go to a store and get the CD for 9.99 during its first week release instead of buying from here tho. Its def. a great cd.
