It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Michael Buble Finally Finds His Own Voice   May 1, 2007
Alan Dorfman (DELRAY BEACH, FL United States)

Though the ghosts of Frank Sinatra and Peter Allen still battle for his soul, in his new CD "Call Me Irresponsible" Michael Buble has finally found his own voice and personality. For those who doubt that his channeling Harry Connick Jr. channeling Frank Sinatra schtick is done, jump to his rendition of the Sinatra signature song "That's Life" and listen to his unaffected vocal amid the combination of both gospel choir and big band.

Looking for other sources of inspiration has led Buble to Billy Paul for "Me And Mrs. Jones" which is done in a more matter-of-fact manner than the hand-wringing original; to Jack Jones for the title cut "Call Me Irresponsible" which is more laid back than the original despite the big band arrangement; to Eric Clapton whose "Wonderful Tonight" becomes a lovely Latin love song with assistance from the great Ivan Lins; and to Willie Nelson whose "Always On My Mind" is a beautiful song which gets the beautiful voice it deserves. A wide variety of sources and styles that Michael masters and makes his own.

Two polished diamonds that cement the new identity are "Everything" in which all previous influences are absent and it is Michael Buble emerging as his own man and the tender and laid back "I'm Your Man."

Special mention must go to the arrangements which swing when they need to and modulate for the tender moments such as "Lost." The upbeat arrangements of "It Had Better Be Tonight" (which can only be described as big band Italian salsa) and "Comin' Home Baby" (with it's backing vocals from Boyz II Men) are just brilliant.

A must for fans and a step towards world dominance by this Canadian superhero, this is a wonderful leap forward for an artist who in the past has been weighed down by his influences. But as he warns us all with the CD opener, "The Best Is Yet To Come."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD   July 15, 2007

This CD was such a great purchase. I'd heard "Everything" on the radio but didn't know who sang it and was asking everyone I knew if they knew the song. Luckily, I heard it on the radio again a few days later and I'd ordered it before the song had finished as I loved it so much. Even though I bought the CD for just one song, the rest of it is so great also. "Lost" has such moving lyrics and such a beautiful tune and then there's some great big band numbers.

If you like this genre of music, you'll love this CD.

I bought this CD last week on the insistence of my teenage son, while we were visiting Toronto. This was definitely a good buy and we've simply been enjoying every single track on this CD. Truly talented, Michael Buble has artistically show-cased is vocal skills on this fantastic CD. My most favourite tracks are #8 Wonderful Tonight, #9 Everything, #2 It Had Better be tonight, #13 Dream, #3 Me and Mrs. Jones, #5 Comin' Home Baby and #12 That's Life. This CD will definitely be my choice this year for Christmas gifts to some special friends on my list! Keep up the good work. . .best wishes from SUNNY BARBADOS.

I have been a fan of Michael Bublé since his self-titled debut album. With each CD Michael makes, I find myself falling more in love with his voice, and this cd is no exception. My favorite song is on the album is "Everything." I was so happy to hear the song on the Top 40 radio stations, and was extremely happy when I caught the video on Vh1. You know you are one cool cat when you have Whoopi Goldberg and Bono from U2 making cameos in a music video. Michael makes "the big band sound" cool.

5 out of 5 stars Michael sells his songs without even trying--he's THAT good !!!   March 29, 2008

Call Me Irresponsible was bound to hit the charts when Michael Bublé released this fine album. Michael's work is outstanding and he easily can match any crooner of the entire twentieth century! The sound quality is excellent and I love that artwork, too!

The album starts with Michael singing "The Best Is Yet To Come;" this number sounds fresh with its big band style arrangement and Michael never sings a superfluous note! Michael's voice is in excellent form and the music complements his vocals perfectly. "It Had Better Be Tonight" has a Latin flavor that works wonders for this ballad; and the brass helps the melody along, too. Michael sings this love song with energy and enthusiasm and this truly amazes me! It's a very strong number that Michael easily aces.

"Me And Mrs. Jones" is a fine cover by Michael Bublé who sings this passionately with all his heart and soul. His voice is smoother than silk and you'll want to slow dance with your sweetheart to this tune. "Comin' Home Baby" is a fine duet between Michael and Boyz II Men; they harmonize and sing this number wonderfully! The piano arrangement really shines and this number is easily a major highlight of this CD.

"Call Me Irresponsible," the title track of this album, places Michael front and center--and he sings this marvelously. The musical arrangement makes good use of the brass and it all works very well. "Everything" is yet another fine tune that Michael Bublé sings to perfection, listen for "Everything;" it's a beautiful ballad.

"I've Got The World On A String," a Harold Arlen number, sounds fresh and new--Arlen would be proud! The backup vocalists do a great job and I really like "I've Got The World On A String." This number benefits from a fine, brassy musical arrangement. "That's Life," a number Frank Sinatra liked to sing, has Michael singing this very well; and it's just as enjoyable as when Frank sang it. The background vocalists are OK; but Michael didn't really need them for this number. I think "That's Life" would have sounded even better without the background chorus.

The album ends with Michael Bublé performing "Dream." "Dream" is a classic pop tune that Michael does with heart and soul every step of the way. "Dream" gets a solid treatment from Michael and it makes a good ending for this album.

Michael Bublé fans will, naturally, want this in their collections. Fans of classic pop vocals will also find a lot to like on this album.
