Album Description
Just awarded the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the UK's prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, blues-rock guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his tenth full-length solo album, BLACK ROCK, on March 23, 2010. This album was recorded at, and named for, Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece. With this album, we wanted to explore a world feeling, and this was the inspiration behind going to record in Greece and using some of the best Greek musicians to add a little flavor to a couple of the tracks. But it s by no means a world album. We wanted Joe s usual youthful and energetic tones to play alongside the worldly vibes of the Greek bouzouki and clarino, said producer Kevin Shirley. Bonamassa says, It was the kind of record Kevin and I wanted to make. We needed to rock again a bit like on my first album. I wrote the whole thing there. Also Joe signed up Blues legend B.B. King for a duet on his new album. The song they perform together is a rendition of the Willie Nelson-penned song, Night Life, which appeared on King s 1967 album BLUES IS KING. Shirley says about the experience, This is a rollicking Stonesy-vibe version of the Willie Nelson song on which B.B. King duets with Joe, both vocally and on his famous Lucille guitar. What a joy and an honor to work with the legend who is possibly the pivot point and unifying musician between Blues and Rock. Other tracks appearing on BLACK ROCK include Jeff Beck s Spanish Boots, Leonard Cohen s poetic Bird On A Wire, Otis Rush's Three Times A Fool, Bobby Parker's Steal Your Heart Away, Blind Boy Fuller's Baby, You Gotta Change Your Mind, John Hiatt's I Know A Place, and James Clark's Look Over Yonders Wall, as well as the originals When The Fire Hits The Sea, Quarryman's Lament, Wandering Earth, Athens To Athens and Blue and Evil.

5 out of 5 stars More great stuff from Joe and the boys.   May 3, 2010

Joe is my favorite guitar player ever. He can do no wrong in my book. I like his "rockier" side on this album. Sounds a lot like Led Zepplin, but i'm not complaining. I could listen to Joe play guitar all day long. The only critique I would give is that some of the blues songs sound like stuff that were re-hashed blues classics, put on the album for filler, but it's not a huge deal to me, I just like to jam along to them and try to steal some of his licks! lol.

5 out of 5 stars Superb - my first but will certainly not be my last purchase...   March 23, 2010

Am attending the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia in a few weeks and have been researching some of the performers that I have not as yet been exposed to. Suffice it to say I am very happy that there are two opportunities to watch Smokin Joe strut his stuff whilst he is "Down Under" - I'll be at the front immersed in the vibe...!!

It's great to hear an album that has some real texture ranging from "Bird on a Wire" through "Quarryman's Lament" to the likes of "Blue and Evil". I bought the "Joe Bonamassa: Live From Royal Albert Hall." at the same time I purchased this album - awesome.

Rock on - very cool..

Update:

Joe certainly met my expectations live - he was the only act I saw at Byron Bay over five days in which an artist blew a speaker (thankfully in the final bars of his final song). There were many (like myself) really satisfied with what we witnessed.

5 out of 5 stars THE BLUES AT BLACK ROCK   April 28, 2010

After reading a guitar player magazine article, I purchased two CD's on the off chance I might get lucky. When I listened to "Ballad of John Henry" and then "You and Me" - I couldn't believe how good this performer was. Got the wonderful opportunity to See Joe live at the Paramount Theater in Peekskill, NY April 17th. I was blown away. This fellow is so much better live then his recorded music could ever hint at. He was so good it was ridiculous. That's the only way I could describe it. The two plus hours went bye in a flash and i realized that if you are going to play the guitar - you want to play like Joe Bonamassa (If you can). Then immediately I ordered: " Black Rock" - unbelievable - 5 stars and counting, also "New Day Yesterday" and "So It's Like That" I didn't just get lucky all in all I found the best Blues Guitarist in the field today.period. I'm no grand expert but I have been listening to music and going to concerts for over 40 years and I have never seen or heard anyone at his level. Joe, Thank you, keep it up baby. I'm now a big fan and right now I cant wait to get back to Black Rock. signed uncle Naldo

I understand fans who have trouble when an artist ventures from what put them on the map. Although to me this isn't much of a stretch. Clapton maneuvered that 800 pound gorilla his whole career, and beautifully I might add. I happen to love this offering by Joe and enjoy watching him push the boundries a little bit. It's not like he's doing duets with Lady Gaga! But there is a great one on here with the King! I tend to judge music by how long I listen before I put it away. Black Rock will be in the rotation for quite some time.
